Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art is pleased to present FOR SALE, an exhibition curated by Jens Hoffmann and featuring works by Art & Language, Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla, Tauba Auerbach, John Baldessari, Daniel Buren, Arabella Campbell, Jordan Kantor, Maria Eichhorn, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Ceal Floyer, Andrea Fraser & Jeff Preiss, Ryan Gander, John Knight, Louise Lawler, Tim Lee, Renata Lucas, Shana Lutker, Kris Martin, Jonathan Monk, Roman Ondák, Raymond Pettibon, Tino Sehgal, Andreas Slominski, Ron Terada, Mario Garcia Torres and Carey Young. Motivated by the need to address the question of place in his work as a curator - in this case, a commercial gallery - this exhibition, with around thirty international artists, presents us with instances in which the status of the work of art and its display in a commercial context is the subject of problematisation and conceptualisation.

Aware of the reality of an expanding art market, the multiplicity of roles in the art world and the sometimes conflicting and evasive relationships between artists, dealers, collectors and curators, Jens Hoffmann aimed to critically reflect on his position in this context. As curator, Hoffmann proposed the same to each artist, i.e. the creation of unpublished works or participation through already executed works that questioned and addressed the fact that they were for sale and exhibited in the space of a commercial gallery. Crucial is the fact that none of the works on display can be bought individually, and the whole set can only be purchased as a whole. This emphasises the fact that FOR SALE is a commercial project by a for-profit gallery, but the possible acquisition of the pieces is obstructed. It is clearly more expensive and frankly more complex to acquire an entire exhibition than a single work. Although apparently perfectly in tune with the commercial side of the gallery, FOR SALE seeks to make routine business more difficult. Among the points of discussion raised by the exhibition are the question of the relationship between the artist, the dealer and the collector; the changing status of the work of art in its transition from the artist's studio to the gallery, and the indeterminate relationship between curators and the commercial world of art.
