This book speaks to us of today's world. With over 150 photographs and 10 essays, it paints a vivid portrait of France's largest region, an allegory for the country as a whole, as Jérôme Fourquet points out in his preface. From the evolution of the rural world to the development of suburban areas, from the essential role of associations in the face of metropolization, from ecological upheavals to migration and the aspirations of young people, the 9 photographers involved in the project go beyond the postcard: their documentary and poetic images constitute the "precipitate" of an era in which everyone will recognize themselves.
This commission, which follows in the footsteps of the Mission héliographique of 1851 and the Mission photographique de la DATAR of 1984, the first visual and scientific inventory of France, was initiated by the Fonds régional d'art contemporain (FRAC) de Nouvelle-Aquitaine in 2022.To reflect the newly-created region, a committee of scientific experts proposed nine themes for photographers to work on.
Revealing the creative potential of the collaboration between experts and photographers, this work questions the role of the photographic medium and the meaning of a photographic commission in an increasingly fluid world. It is a snapshot in time of an encounter with a territory and its inhabitants.
