Serralves / Mousse Magazine
On the occasion of the first major exhibition of the work of this award-winning duo of Portuguese artists, Serralves is publishing, in association with the Italian publisher/distributor Mousse, a monograph covering the nearly twenty years of the artistic career of João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva.
An unprecedented situation in the career of the duo, the publication is a true exhibition catalog, with about 250 installation views meticulously documented, going from a work in magazine to a work in film, photography, sculpture, and installation.
Recognizing the importance of discursive production in Paiva+Gusmão's work, the publication also includes a generous anthology of the artists' writings.
Accompanied by unpublished essays - by Chris Fitzpatrick, independent curator, formerly Director of Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp, and the Kunstverein München, Anthony Huberman, Director and Chief Curator of the CCA Wattis Institute in San Francisco, and Philippe Vergne, Director of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art - who propose different readings of a work that, combining anthropological record, drama and scientific research, presents itself as an investigation of the unfathomable, a form of esoteric knowledge that materializes in "poetic and philosophical fictions".
